Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Alaska, Inuit/ Inupiaq , ca. 1940s CE. An intriguing spirit mask, hand-carved from porous whale bone, depicting an expressive visage with relatively naturalistic features: a high relief nose flanked by slit shaped eyes, a partially open mouth that is neither smiling nor frowning, and rounded contours. The overall expression of the visage is one of surprise or intensely focused concentration. The verso is relatively flat with only a small suspension string running through a perforation at the top center.
