This unit served as an independent command, but for a time in 1864 was part of the 12th Battalion Virginia Artillery. Later it served in N. A. Sturdivant's Battalion of Artillery and surrendered 3 officers and 45 men at Appomattox. Captain Nathaniel A. Sturdivant was in command. also called Albemarle Artillery. Nathaniel A. Sturdivant (b. 1831, d. 1869) Confederate officer. Captain, 2nd Company A, 12th Battalion Virginia Light Artillery - Feb. 17, 1862 serving in the Department of North Carolina in early 1863 and then the Department of Southern Virginia (April-May 1863). He served in the Department of Richmond in late 1863. He was captured near Petersburg on June 16, 1864 and not exchanged until October. He was promoted major in March 1865 and participated in the retreat to Appomattox.
