Description:

Published by Reilly & Britton, Chicago, 1909. First Edition, First Printing, of the fifth Oz book. This title was unique in the series for its use of variously colored paper stock, indicating the progression of Dorothy and friends through the districts to Oz. The work also introduced the popular characters Shaggy Man and Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter. "The entrance into fairyland in this book is particularly captivating. At no point is there an obvious break between ordinary reality and magical country. It makes us feel that wonderful things are right next door to our daily lives if only we use our imagination or look at things the right way" (Rogers, p. 163). The colored sheets are found in the first printing only. The arrangement of the colors are here in Hanff & Greene's variant state A, from the earliest printed sheets: no type batter in the words "Toto on" (34.4) or to the pagination of page 121; pagination and caption present on page 129; illustrations not in color; and the final ad leaf listing Baum's works under his pseudonym Laura Bancroft on the recto and under his own name on the verso. It is bound in the primary binding, the imprint "Reilly & Britton" on the spine not fully capitalized Hanff & Greene V.1.A; Bienvenue & Schmidt, pp. 41-42. Katharine M. Rogers, L. Frank Baum: Creator of Oz, 2003. Octavo. Original green cloth, lettered and decorated in black, dark green, tan, and red, front cover illustration showing the road to Oz, rear cover illustration with silhouettes of Dorothy and Ozma within a sunburst effect, illustrated endpapers printed in red and black.
