Lot 179
The 1863 "Liberty and No Slavery" Patriotic Civil War Token is a privately minted anti-slavery token that served as emergency currency during the American Civil War. Unlike most patriotic tokens of the era that focused purely on Union military pride or commerce, this specific variety stands out for its explicit abolitionist stance. The Obverse (Front): Features a right-facing portrait of Lady Liberty (often referred to by collectors as the "French Liberty" style) surrounded by the bold, powerful legend "LIBERTY AND NO SLAVERY" and the date 1863. The Reverse (Back): Most commonly paired with a reverse die displaying crossed United States flags, a shield, a liberty cap on a pike, a laurel wreath.
