Lot 119
Signed, Inscribed and Dated 1976 lower left. Yossi Stern (19231992), also known as Jossi Stern, was a prominent Hungarian-born Israeli artist, widely celebrated as the "Painter of Jerusalem." Recognized for capturing the essence of both the ancient city and the burgeoning Israeli state, his diverse body of work spanned paintings, illustrations, lithographs, and book design. He harbored a lifelong love affair with Jerusalem. He spent hours walking its narrow cobblestone paths and alleyways, later translating his observations into vibrant canvases that layered contemporary imagery with ancient roads. Jerusalem's former mayor, Teddy Kollek, officially dubbed him the "Painter of Jerusalem". Stern's international reputation grew through global exhibitions, illustrated children's books, and specialized prints, including lithographs of everyday Jewish life and Klezmer musicians. Later in life, at age 62, he made headlines by publicly sharing that he was gay, noting to the press that he had never hidden his identity. Original watercolor and ink paintings by Yossi Stern depicting the iconic "Donkeys in Jerusalem" motif generally hold an estimated market value between $400 and $2,400 USD.
