Lot 150

Signed and dated lower right. Wini Smart was a watercolorist and oil painter of marine and landscapes, many of them scenes of Maine, and her specialty was watercolors. She was also a muralist, bas-relief sculptor, and illustrator including "Early History of Toms River and Dover Township." Smart was born on March 17, 1932, in Neptune, New Jersey. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, and the Art Students League of New York. Smart maintained two galleries, one in Northeast Harbor, Maine, for 40 years; another in Boca Grande, Florida, since 1980. Smart died on September 15, 2017. RECEIVING over 30 awards, Wini Smart is listed in Whos Who in American Art and Worlds Whos Who of Women. She has operated the Smart Studio gallery in Maine since 1967 and opened the Florida gallery in 1980. Her paintings have found a ready market with locals and visitors alike. Paintings are in private and public collections in nearly every state and in Europe, Canada, and South America. She has painted eight corporate murals. Wini Smart has a heritage of sea life. Her ancestors owned or sailed schooners from Maine to Cuba. Born in New Jersey, her parents farmed and were wholesale florists. This background is apparent in Winis love for the sea and nature. Living near the sea is important; the artist now lives in her studio home on the waters edge on Cranberry Island in Maine and on a bayou in Florida. These locations offer much inspiration.
