Description:

Artist signed on the undersigned. Potawatomi quill baskets—often referred to as quill boxes (or gawyek gokpenagen)—are highly prized, masterfully crafted works of art native to the Anishinaabe people of the Great Lakes region. These unique containers are constructed by sewing natural or vividly dyed porcupine quills into a pliable base of white paper birch bark (wigwas). Sweetgrass (wishkbemishkos) is frequently woven along the rims, imparting a long-lasting, pleasant fragrance to the vessel. Historically used to store dried foods, seeds, and traditional medicines, these creations represent a deeply sacred relationship with the natural landscape. Because collecting the materials requires immense patience and the art form is passed down through fewer hands today, true Indigenous-made quill boxes are considered rare and valuable heirlooms.
