Erie, PA Peach Street Grounds. George Ameen Hamid Sr. (February 4, 1896 June 1971) is an entrepreneur who made major contributions to America's outdoor amusement and entertainment industry. He established significant productions during the 20th century for fairs, circuses, carnivals and expositions. He is the father of George A. Hamid Jr.. He was born in 1896 in Broumana, Lebanon. He moved to America in 1907 with the Buffalo Bill Wild West show, and later founded the Hamid-Morton Circus with Robert Morton. n 1953 he became President of the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions). Newsweek magazine described him in 1965 as "one of America's top entrepreneurs in outdoor entertainment". He died in 1971. Clyde Beatty (June 10, 1903 July 19, 1965) an American cat trainer popular from his debut in the 1920's until his death in 1965, used a rough, fighting style in the cage; his act was punctuated with the cracks of his whip and shots fired from his blank gun. He subjugated as many as 40 "black-maned African lions and Royal Bengal tigers" at one time.. Beatty purchased a circus in 1945 that in 1958 bought the Cole Bros. name and formed the Clyde Beatty "Cole Bros. Circus, which was the largest tent show on the road in the United States at that time. Lee Berrian Powell (May 15, 1908 July 30, 1944) was an American film actor known for leading or other major roles in several serials and B-westerns. He was the first actor to portray The Lone Ranger on film. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in combat on several Pacific Islands, on one of which he died. Powell also appeared in Barnett Brothers circus being billed as "The Lone Ranger" until litigation had him change his billing. Powell married Norma Rogers, a circus bareback rider and the daughter of the circus owner.
