A World War II-era National Defense Worker license plate topper issued by the Wright Aeronautical Employees Association (WAEA) is a highly collectible piece of mid-century automobilia and aviation history. These stamped-metal tags were attached to the top of defense workers' license plates starting around 1940 to signify their critical employment status. The designation granted them access to restricted manufacturing areas and priority parking, while signaling their patriotism.
