This vintage guest book from the late 1920's - 1971 was used by special and important guests and features the signatures of numerous celebrity occupants. This official hotel register guests would pen their names to as they checked into the inn. The finely bound, leather covered register is in remarkable condition with entries beginning in the mid-1920s through the 1960's. Many famous playwrights, authors, musicians, college presidents, WWII military commanders, Governors, Politicians, actors, etc... Some of the recognizable names besides the ones in the title include Hubert H. Humphrey, Mary Martin, Lyman Beecher Stowe, Scientist / inventor Jean Piccard and his wife Jeanette Piccard, The Smothers Brothers, Shirley Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Carlos Montoya, David Rubinoff, Oscar Hammerstein, Admiral Leahy, Kitty Carlisle, Lord Wright, Chief Justice Charles E. Hughes, Composer Aaron Copland, Henry Morgenthau Jr., Julia Buxton, Joe Cronin, plus many more. Charles Evans Hughes Sr. was an American statesman, politician, Cornell Law School Professor, and jurist who served as the 11th Chief Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941. David Rubinoff, also known as Dave Rubinoff, was a popular violinist who was heard during the 1930s and 1940s on various radio programs playing his $100,000 Stradivarius violin. He also performed in theaters, clubs and schools, and he gave several concerts at the White House during the 1940's. Henry Morgenthau Jr. was the United States Secretary of the Treasury during most of the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He played a major role in designing and financing the New Deal. Joseph Edward Cronin was an American professional baseball player, manager and executive. He played in Major League Baseball as a shortstop, most notably as a member of the Boston Red Sox. Cronin spent over 48 years in baseball, culminating with 14 years as president of the American League. In the heart of New England, where the maple-lined lawn of Amherst Common meets the campus of Amherst College, the historic Inn has been a treasured landmark hotel in Western Massachusetts since 1926. The property features 49 guestrooms and suites, a ballroom, conference facilities, a tented garden area, and the restaurant. Recognized as a Silver LEED Certified hotel and member of Historic Hotels of America, the Inn prides itself on its commitment to both environmental sustainability and historic preservation. The property underwent a major renovation in 2012. The rich history of the Inn has served many notable guests, including Robert Frost, who frequently stayed there, and Archibald MacLeish. It hosted a gala celebration for Frosts 80th birthday in 1954, which MacLeish attended. The Inn was conceived by Ernest M. Whitcomb (AC 1904), who formed a committee of like-minded alumni and led the effort to raise the approximately $400,000 in funds needed to construct the original structure. It officially opened on June 3, 1926. The 46,000-square-foot Inn, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amherst College, is designed to meet the needs of Amherst College faculty, staff, alumni and visiting guests as well as corporate and leisure travelers. With more than 8,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor meeting space, including a 2,360-square-foot ballroom and multi-purpose meeting room.
