Beautiful mahogany phonograph and cabinet. It has a Levis Music Store tag when it was sold in Rochester, NY. Levis Music Store was a highly respected musical mecca in downtown Rochester for nearly 70 years that enhanced the city's reputation on the national music map. Levis sold first-class equipment like Steinway pianos, Gibson guitars and Ludwig drums and repaired all kinds of instruments. Advertisements touted the store as Rochester's original Hammond organ dealer and western New York's largest sheet-music dealer. Hundreds of people took music lessons at Levis every week. High-profile musicians like Mantovani and Johnny Mathis stopped by, and high-profile customers like George Eastman shopped there. The best-remembered Levis store was across from the Eastman Theatre. It was said to be the only building constructed in downtown during the Depression. Samuel H. Levis started the business in 1903 with a store on West Main Street. Innovations like the Edison Phonograph (made by Thomas Edison's National Phonograph Co.) and the player-piano attachment were "sweeping the public fancy" at the time, according to a 1953 news story. Levis became the largest and longest-running dealer of Edison merchandise, and Eastman purchased phonographs from the store early on Levis moved to South Avenue in 1905, first at one site and later across the street. The shop was expanded several times. When Levis died in 1912, his son, William, and daughter, Ruth Levis-Adams, took over the burgeoning business. They opened another store at East Main and Gibbs streets in 1921 and built their magnificent new shop on the site in 1934.
