The "Curlies" (Porcupine Twist): The defining loops or curls protruding from the weave are known as "curly-ques," "porcupine points," or "thistle twists." Master weavers create these by twisting the horizontal weaver weavers outward before sliding them back into the vertical stakes, forming a structural spike or loops that mimic natural organic textures. These baskets are traditionally constructed using a combination of hand-pounded black ash splints for structural rigidity and braided sweetgrass for a flexible weave that gives off a pleasant, long-lasting aroma.
