Lot 70

Russ Hill was born on the Tuscarora Reservation near Lewiston, NY in 1942. Tuscarora Nation Beaver Clan. The Tuscarora are comprised of seven clans the Deer, Bear, Wolf, Turtle, Snipe, Beaver and Eel. These clans have been historically documented back to the 1700s, and are the basis of authority among all Iroquois tribes, including the Tuscarora. During his youth he and his family lived in Buffalo, NY, Grand Island, NY and Tonawanda, NY. Following in his father Stan Hill, Sr's footsteps and other Haudenosaunee men before him, Russ became a union ironworker. Russ had always admired his father's work and often helped with polishing, and later finishing, the antler and bone work that the elder artist produced. Russ never formally studied carving, but he had the time and good fortune to observe his father's process in the garage at Grand Island and at their shop on Six Nations Reserve. Together, the two discovered new techniques that could be used to for carving and finishing that enabled them to fully explore the colors and textures of their material. Expressing in antler and occasionally bone, Russ enjoys the fineness of the finish, the subtleties of tone, and the opportunity to articulate fine detail. He is open to the challenges of making unusual items, such as knife handles and gear shift knobs. The majority of his carvings feature animals such as bears, eagles, and owls carefully crafted from moose or deer antler. Historical Haudenosaunee artifacts such as bone combs, masks, and stories from traditional teachings also figure into his representations. Russ has been represented and received recognition at events at the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ); Festival of the Arts (Santa Fe, NM); Native American Exposition (Chicago, IL); Red Cloud Indian School (Pine Ridge, SD); Phillips Gallery (Toronto, Ontario) and other venues across North America. His work is in the permanent collections of the Iroquois Museum (Howes Cave, NY) and the Indian Arts and Crafts Board (Washington, DC).
