Best remembered as a sculptor and avid polo player, Thomas Holland was born in Alameda, California and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts,* UC Berkley and the University of Mexico. An interesting and charismatic character, Holland also dabbled with ballet, sailing, boxing, and fencing. Holland created bronze pieces with an equestrian theme, using his interest in polo as a means of injecting energy and motion into his pieces. Holland created a monument to the Pony Express located at the western end of the famous route in Sacramento, California. The artist’s deep involvement in polo was such that he even was afforded the opportunity to present a sculpture to the Prince of Wales in 1981.
