The Holland Furnace Co. Shonk sign is a highly collectible piece of vintage Americana produced by the Chas. W. Shonk Co. Litho of Chicago for the Holland Furnace Company. Founded in 1906 in Holland, Michigan, the Holland Furnace Company grew into the largest exclusive installer of residential furnaces in the United States by the mid-20th century. The sign was manufactured by Chas. W. Shonk Company (often marked "Shonk Works" on the edge or back). Shonk was legendary for producing high-quality, lithographed tin advertising signs and trays during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Unlike standard outdoor storefront branding, this is an instructional tin sign meant to be hung right next to the furnace in a home's basement. It features detailed operating instructions, technical diagrams of the heating unit, grate positioning, and draft control mechanisms. True originals typically boast black and red text on a white or cream background, heavily accented by a thick orange or red border. It prominently features the iconic furnace graphics and the company's famous slogan, "Holland Furnaces Make Warm Friends." Salesman Samples: Some variants of these signs were smaller and built explicitly into wooden, leatherette-cased salesman demonstrator kits, acting as an educational tool to show 1940s and 1950s homeowners how the system operated.
