Description:

These are among the rarest of the J.B. Hirsch bookends, those of the "Bookseller". Hirsch had an agreement with a famous French foundry in the early 1930's and used the molds of that foundry to make certain bookends based on very high end art deco bronze and ivory original bookends coming out of Paris. Hirsch used spelter or pot metal with a bronze or painted finish, marble bases, and faux ivory, ivorine or celluloid heads instead of ivory to make castings of these bookends. They were only made up until 1936 or so when World War II started for France and all commerce ceased. These have the beautiful imported French black marble bases with rich ivory and caramel swirling veins. They are bronze finished metal with ivorine or celluloid heads with delicately cast features. The gentleman, Victorian or Edwardian in his frockcoat, cravat, vest and knee breeches, pushes a heavy cart piled haphazardly with books. The original sculpture in bronze was by the artist G. Delon of France somew in the 1920's. Please ask specific questions on details, condition, and shipping prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS, and the bidder will be responsible for payment.
