Serial number M19608. The history of Stromberg is the history of the development of modern time recording devices. Stromberg is literally the first name in the industry. At the turn of the century, Mr. Alfred Stromberg, the same man you associate with the development of the automobile carburetor and the Stromberg-Carlson radio, became interested in the devices business firms were using to record the time of arrival of correspondence. The crudest device then in use was a rubber stamp with removable slugs to indicate the time and hour. These were changed from hour to hour, and day to day - except when the clerk forgot. The next improvement was a stamp with an outer ring showing the hours of the day, like a clock dial. Again, this was a hand operated device which depended for accuracy on human perfection and thus wasn't very accurate. A still later development installed a clock movement, but the manual pounding of the stamp inevitably affected the clock mechanism. Alfred Stromberg was electrically minded and conceived the idea of a time stamp operated by electricity, using impulses from a wall clock. Under his direction then, the first electric time stamp was developed in 1907 and in that same year the Stromberg Electric Company of Chicago began the manufacture and distribution of this new automatic and accurate business machine. This time stamp represented such a remarkable improvement over other methods that the company prospered from the beginning. The recording of the time of receipt of correspondence quickly became a minor application of this new device. Even in this early growth period of the American industrial complex, labor costs were closely related to production costs. It became increasingly necessary to find an accurate method for recording employees' work time. Using the basic principles of the electric time stamp, Stromberg Electric Company developed the first electrically operated In and Out Recorder. Following this, the company soon developed a Job Time Recorder, a Program Instrument and Secondary Wall Clock, all operated by electric impulses from a single Master Clock. Stromberg employed more than 600 people at its peak, selling a diversified product line through two national sales staffs and maintained a separate service organization located in key markets throughout the country.
