Description:

It is signed on the lower right. Thomas John Mitchell, born in Rochester, New York in 1875, was known largely in his own community, as a member of the Rochester Art Club and the Geneseeans. The latter was a group of representational landscape painters devoted to regional imagery. Mitchell had a studio in the old Reynolds Arcade. In addition, he was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and the Salmagundi Club. In 1930 Mitchell had a one-man show and during that decade he visited Taos. Like many artists, he suffered through the Great Depression. Mitchell's works are to be found in the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester and in that city's University Club.
