Description:

Published by Hodder & Stoughton n.d., New York. Small 4to, pictorial green spine over decorated boards with inset color plate. Hodder & Stoughton, NY, nd (c. 1920). Frontis and 19 color plates by E.J. Detmold. Die-cut onlaid color plate surrounded by a decorative green border with gold titles and trees and bushes in silhouette. This title was originally part of the series of large quarto, matching children's books: Book of Baby Beasts (1911), Book of Baby Birds (1912), Book of Baby Pets (1915), Book of Baby Dogs (1915) and Our Little Neighbors (1921). They all appeared in matching (relatively cheap) paper-covered boards, obviously as a down-market, inexpensive children's gift book. They were all printed in England, as is this edition. But some brilliant person at Hodder and Stoughton's New York office decided this was worth creating a spectacular binding for, and that they did, for this U.S. edition.
