Description:

Susan Bull Riley grew up in Vermont and spent more time outside than in. These paintings suggest she may still. Her time indoors is spent painting the observations of her day, so it is no surprise that birds and other creatures appear in her paintings as well. She brings the same affection and close observation to all creatures as to her botanical and landscape paintings. Susan lives and works in a renovated East Montpelier schoolhouse with her husband, the musician Richard Riley. Susan Bull Riley has exhibited at the New York State Museum’s Biennial exhibit “Focus on Nature” which draws on an international pool of artists; the Montshire Museum in Norwich, VT; the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation; The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology; eight oil paintings were selected for the 2008 Breeding Birds of New York Atlas, which is marketed in fine art as well as natural history circles. Bull Riley’s paintings have received honors in regional, national and international galleries and institutions. They have been sought by organizations such as The New York State Museum, The National Science Foundation, the Vermont Community Foundation, the American Chestnut Foundation, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and from many local land trusts. Her work can be found in public and private collections in this country and beyond. She exhibits throughout Vermont.
