In 1919, he was employed by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Co which he helped organize and he later became president of the company in 1929. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's he was a well known and respected racing pilot and in 1932, he founded the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics and Technology. He was also a well known author of aviation related magazines, books and newspaper articles and continued to write throughout his life. Casey Jones died in 1976 at the age of 81. In 1932, Charles S. "Casey" Jones, a pioneer aviator and aviation company executive, foresaw the need for highly trained technicians to design, build and service aircrafts and engines. George A. Vaughn, Jr. and Lee D. Warrender joined with Jones in founding the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics, the predecessor of the Academy of Aeronautics and as of September of 1986, the College of Aeronautics. CLEVELAND AIR RACES: In 1929, airplanes were still considered something of a science fiction fantasy, therefore the exciting flying events were reported in newspapers around the world. The daily flying schedule included dead stick landing contests, glider demonstrations, Goodyear blimp flights, parachute jumping contests and military demonstrations. The Navy High Hats, a formation team formed long before the Blue Angels, created a worldwide sensation by flying with their planes tied together by one-inch ropes from wing-struts to wing struts. Even the late Charles A. Lindbergh was in the show flying a Boeing biplane. There were also closed-course pylon races and cross-country races from as far away as Log Angeles, Miami and Toronto; all timed to reach Cleveland on different days of the show. Women pilots, including the already famous Amelia Earhart, raced in a special Powder Puff Derby from Santa Monica, California, to Cleveland. Sir Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958) accompanied Vilhjalmur Stefansson's expedition (1913-1918) to the Arctic regions and Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition (1921-1922) to Antarctica. A pioneer in air exploration, he was the first to fly (1928) from North America to the European polar regions, traveling from Point Barrow, Alaska to Spitsbergen. He commanded an Antarctic exploration (1928-1929) in which flights were made in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula, and in 1931 he headed a submarine expedition to the Arctic regions. On 15 April 1928, a year after Charles Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic, Wilkins and Eielson made a trans-Arctic crossing from Point Barrow, Alaska, to Spitsbergen, arriving about 20 hours later on 16 April, touching along the way at Grant Land on Ellesmere Island. For this feat and his prior work, Wilkins was knighted, and during the ensuing celebration in New York, he met an Australian actress, Suzanne Bennett, whom he later married. Now financed by William Randolph Hearst, Wilkins continued his polar explorations, flying over Antarctica in the San Francisco. He named the island of Hearst Land after his sponsor, and Hearst thanked Wilkins by giving him and his bride a flight aboard Graf Zeppelin.
