Lot 216

In the front of this book a letter is pasted from the Author, John Wilson Murray to the then Mayor of Concord, NH. Charles R. Corning. Corning also has his ownership of the book noted on one of the front pages. Murray has a fascinating history which started as a Union sailor aboard the USS Michigan, which sailed on the Great Lakes during the Civil War and guarded the Confederate prison Camp on Johnson's Island. A conspiracy to overtake the ship by the confederacy, and then to burn the cities of Detroit and Cleveland and to free the prisoners was foiled. 484 pages of great reading of Murrays life as one of the first famous detectives. He later became one of the main law enforcement officials for Canada, working in the Department of Attorney Generals Office, Ontario (which letterhead the enclosed letter is written on).
