Sketches in the history of the underground railroad comprising many thrilling incidents of the escape of fugitives from slavery and the perils of those who aided them. Fredonia, N.Y.: W. McKinstry & Son. The book has a dedication to Frederick Douglass. It contains 174 pages. The book is signed by Willard McKinstry and addressed to Abraham Cranston's Sons (Emory E. Cranston, Civil War Soldier). Willard McKinstry (1815 - 1899) was the publisher and editor of the Censor, the anti-slavery newspaper in Fredonia (Chautauqua County) NY. The paper had been founded by Henry C. Frisbee (1801 - 1873), another anti-slavery activist in the village. The Censor was well known for its political stance. Shortly after the Civil War, McKinstry convinced former Underground Railroad conductor Eber Pettit to publish his memoir in the Censor. About fifteen years later, McKinstry re-published Pettit’s memoir in book form. Entitled Sketches in the History of the Underground Railroad.
