Richard Ranft (1862-1931) was a highly acclaimed and well listed Swiss artist. This is a rare, large colored artists proof etching/aquatint circa 1900-1920 - one of only 85 attributed to him! It depicts a woman and girls gathering green leaves from beneath a large tree. HAND colored with soft pastels of browns, greens, and with rosy hues to the girls garments and the sky. Highly detailed, crisp clean lines. Antique identification paper affixed to the back: Original Etching. Hand Made Artists Proof - Ranft. Title: Early Morning. Signature of the artist in pencil on lower right. Small triangular European engravers initials/mark on the bottom left, JZC. ARTIST/INFO: Ranft was born in Plainpalais, Switzerland in 1862 and began studying painting and drawing in Geneva, under the direction of Sordet (1836-1915), who taught him the art of landscape painting. He then moved to Paris, where he attended the workshops of Gustav Courbet and Augustin Alexandre Dumont, a sculptor who taught him engraving. Ranft then created many lithographed plates, including posters and etchings, while continuing with landscape painting. In Paris he was elected a Full Member of the Societe National des Beaux-Arts, in whose Salons he exhibited regularly. He illustrated several books, executed 85 original etchings in color, 26 in black, several monotypes, one lithograph and sixteen etchings reproducing paintings by various artists, including Turner, Watteau, Fragonard and others. He was considered by the English as the best interpreter of Turner. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
