Description:

Very Rare Goulds Pumps, "Goulds Water Systems" Sign. It was made by Stout Sign. Co. St. Louis, MO. Stout Sign Company was established in 1886 by the Stout family of St. Louis, Missouri. The Family was intent on capitalizing on the increase in automobile traffic on the Nation's Highway System. With this traffic, came an opportunity for roadside advertising. The Family was set on making their mark by utilizing the highest quality processes and materials which resulted in some of the most durable signs ever made. This attention to quality and durability quickly caught the attention of brands like Burma Shave, Baby Ruth, Michelin Tire, Pepsi Cola and others. With the outbreak of WW II Stout Sign Company, along with other manufacturers, gave it's manufacturing facility over to the Federal Government in support of the war effort. The little that Stout was allowed to operate in the facility was put to use, in part, producing the widely recognized Uncle Sam signs reading "I Want You for the U.S. Army". In 1965 Lady Bird Johnson's Highway Beautification Act dealt a blow to the lucrative highway advertising sign market. The Act greatly reduced the number of signs allowed and forced their placement much further back from the roadside. The result was fewer and much larger signs. The reduction in quantity and larger size forced Stout to seek new avenues to growth. This led to Gas Station Signs and POP Displays which has in some form carried Stout through to today.
