Barney Ross (born Dov-Ber "Beryl" David Rosofsky, 19091967), an iconic American professional boxer. Known as the "Pride of the Ghetto," he is celebrated as one of the greatest fighters of all time: He was only the third fighter in history to capture world titles in three different weight divisions (Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, and Welterweight). In his 81-fight professional career, he faced legendary hall-of-famers and was never once knocked out. Raised in a tough Chicago neighborhood, his father was murdered when Barney was 14. Desperate to earn money to reunite his family from orphanages, he worked as a street brawler and even ran errands for mobster Al Capone before turning to professional boxing. After retiring from the ring, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During the Battle of Guadalcanal, despite being severely wounded, he single-handedly defended a shell hole against nearly two dozen enemy soldiers, saving the lives of his fellow Marines. He was awarded the Silver Star for his extraordinary bravery. Barry N. Taub is a well-known name in the world of vintage boxing photography, renowned for capturing iconic images of the sport's golden era. He is particularly celebrated for his work with The USA Boxing News and his legendary "Photo Flashbacks". Taub's photographs primarily capture the heavyweights, middleweights, and local legends of mid-20th-century boxing (predominantly the 1940s and 1950s).
