Lot 144
It is hand signed by 22 players from the Atlanta Crackers and the stamp of Southern Association League President John D. Martin. The Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association ended the 1934 season with a record of 77 wins and 74 losses, finishing fifth in the SA. John D. Martin (18831962) was a Memphis-based attorney and later a federal judge who served as a key administrative figure in professional baseball during the early to mid-1900s Southern Association President: He was elected president, secretary, and treasurer of the Southern Association in 1923, a position he held for many years. National Association Vice President: In 1926, he was elected Vice President of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, the governing body for minor league baseball. A Goldsmith baseball signed by Hugh Casey is a rare and historically significant collectible, primarily due to Caseys tragic death at age 37 and the vintage nature of the P. Goldsmith Sons brand. Casey, a star reliever for the Brooklyn Dodgers, died in 1951, making his single-signed items particularly difficult for collectors to find. Single-Signed Baseballs: A single-signed Hugh Casey baseball is extremely rare. For instance, Lelands Auction noted they had handled only one such item, which sold for $516.10. Casey was born in Atlanta in 1913. He started his professional baseball career with the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association at the age of 18. The Southern Association (SA) was a higher-level minor league in American organized baseball from 1901 through 1961. For most of its existence, the Southern Association was two steps below the Major Leagues; it was graded Class B (1902-1904), Class A (19051935). A stable, eight-team loop, the Southern Association's member teams typically included the Atlanta Crackers, Birmingham Barons, Chattanooga Lookouts, Little Rock Travelers, Memphis Chicks, Nashville Vols, and New Orleans Pelicans. The eighth club was usually either the Knoxville Smokies, Mobile Bears, or Shreveport Sports. The Association was formed from the remnants of the Southern League (18851899) by Abner Powell, Newt Fisher, and Charley Frank.
