Lot 147

Original white porcelain signs with black lettering depicting a pointing hand in one direction for White Only and one for Colored". With the Supreme Courts ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896, the concept of separate but equal--begun with the end of Reconstruction in 1875--such signs became commonplace over water fountains, bathrooms and door entrances in the South; reinforcing laws to separate African Americans from whites. It would not be until the Supreme Courts 1954 decision, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, that legal segregation would be overturned.
