Lot 108
A bold broadside featuring an image of the 13,096 ton steamship Cymric which traversed the Liverpool to Boston route from 1903 to 1912. Ship sails from Boston on Saturday May 23, a date which occurred in 1908. In multiple typefaces the broadside touts "macaroni wireless telegraph", "submarine signaling" and "Free...eating utensils". The SS Cymric was a 13,096-ton steamship built by the legendary Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast (the same builders who later constructed the RMS Titanic). Originally a combination cargo and passenger livestock carrier, the Cymric was shifted to the premium LiverpoolQueenstownBoston passenger service from 1903 to 1914. Queenstown (now known as Cobh, Ireland) was the primary port of departure for hundreds of thousands of Irish emigrants heading to America. The advertised price of $27.50 represents third-class or "steerage" passage, which was the lifeblood of transatlantic shipping lines during the early 1900's immigration boom. The Cymric served as a troop transport during the Boer War and World War I. Her service ended tragically on May 8, 1916, when she was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German U-boat.
