Description:

This lovely square piano was built by Chickering of Boston October 1861 (Serial Number: 24505). This lovely piano was built just after the start of the Civil War. Once the most popular style of piano built in America, these instruments are nearly extinct today. It is made of Brazilian Rosewood, and is made in a more delicate Rococo Revival style. Note the beautifully carved legs and the elaborately carved moldings, all hallmarks of this classic style. all parts are original. The delicate "harp like" tone of these square pianos is a bit different from the way modern pianos sound. In 1823, Jonas Chickering was the first piano manufacturer in America. Thirty years before Steinway began building pianos, Chickering held top awards worldwide for piano design and manufacturing. President Lincoln is purported to have had two Chickering's in the White House, and Celebrity pianists like Franz Liszt and Louis Gottschalk stated "the Chickering is the only instrument that would hold up to their strenuous performances". Liszt and Gottschalk always played Chickering pianos on their American concert tours. Chickering and Steinway competed through the 19th Century, making the best pianos in the world. Only a wealthy few could afford this instrument in the mid 19th Century. Chickering designs were innovative, and desirable for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship, deep rich tone quality, and beauty. The harp like tones of these pianos, created by the double strings in the treble clef is extraordinary.
