Description:

This token was likely a campaign token for William Seward during his unsuccessful bid for New York governor in 1834. He was finally elected to the post in 1838, and evenly served as President Lincoln's Secretary of State during the Civil War. The 1834 William H. Seward Hard Times Token is a rare 27mm brass or silvered-brass medalet. Issued by the Whig Party for his unsuccessful 1834 gubernatorial campaign in New York, these tokens are valued by exonumia collectors. HT-27 (or HT-27A): The obverse features a left-facing bust of Seward encircled by the text WILLIAM. H. SEWARD. GOV NR (or similar variations like "Our Next Govnr"). The reverse features a perched eagle with wings inverted surrounded by A FAITHFUL FRIEND TO OUR COUNTRY.
