Lot 100

A century after the Civil War took place, Topps issued the 1962 Civil War News cards. The 88 card set depicted the most well-known battles. The last card is a checklist. The fronts of the 1962 Topps Civil War News cards feature a very graphic color drawing, the name and date of that battle. The reverse gives a short description of the specific event. When put in order, the cards show an accurate sequence of events as to what took place during the Civil War. While kids, specifically young boys, were infatuated with the Civil War trading cards, the cards were met with a great deal of opposition from parents who did not want their children viewing such graphic and violent scenes. It is one of the most popular non-sports sets of the 1960s, even though it caused protests over the graphic battle scenes. The 88-card set features highly detailed artwork. It was a collaborative effort that had contributions from several artists, most notably of which was Norman Saunders. The images hold back very little, portraying lots of blood and gore. Controversial even today. This a rare 24 ct. box as most if not all of these boxes that held the wax packs got tossed out. The Top is missing.
