Lot 200

This extremely rare cream jug is dated 1912 was made for Titanic, yet never made it on board as it was stock China to replace what got worn or damaged from use when it arrived in NYC. Had she not sunk on her maiden voyage, this set would have eventually been used on Titanic. British Registry date markings; RN 117214 (1889) and RN 34208 (1898) and below those the date you almost never see: 3/1912. March of 1912 was the fitting out deadline for the ship and the order placed for the First Class China from distributors Stonier & Co of Liverpool had those markings and date code on the base of the Titanics First Class Brownfield Wisteria patterned China. Beautifully decorated with hand painted turquoise enamel tendrils and an elaborate brown transfer. Supplied to the White Star Line by Chandeliers, Stonier & Co. Ltd of Liverpool. These were used aboard the RMS Titanic and Olympic. The handle fits nicely between the finger and thumb and is perfectly balanced. One of the hardest pieces of this pattern to find and one of those types of items that sets a White Star China collection apart. The China used on sister ships Titanic and Olympic were stunningly beautiful and featured transfer designs that were painstakingly hand painted. The red flag in the centerpiece White Star Line logo was always hand painted, as was the turquoise in the different patterns, resulting in tableware that was absolutely gorgeous and worthy of any palace. (When they referred to Titanic as a Floating Palace, they werent kidding.).
