Description:

Presented for your consideration is this outstanding 10" X 13" albumen photograph of soldiers in a camp. Upon close examination we see most are wearing white crossed belts, Shako helmets with plumes, or kepis. One soldier even has a very tall stove-pipe hat on! More research needs to be done as it appears that they are a camp of early Civil War Marines training on land near a body of water. In the background is a farmhouse with people (men and women) on the porch watching the soldiers activities. The photographer was up on an adjacent hill for a good view and is similar in style of the E.& H.T. Anthony or Gardner photos of the era. The raising of the flag is taking place because most of the soldiers are looking forward towards the drummer boy and the flag itself and some of the soldiers are at attention too. You can clearly make out Springfield rifles standing up in groups and I make out 22 individual tents. There are officers with Kepis and even a "ghost" image of a soldier and a flag. There are several onlookers on the porch of the house, and a gentlemen on the side with a white horse and carriage!. The photo is mounted on sturdy period paper with a 1.25" ornate border framing it. On the reverse is a later period albumen photo circa 1870's of a very distinguished women, which is wonderful in it's own right. On the side table next to her is what looks like a close up image of a soldier with rank insignia, and Photo Album. Outside images, especially of camp life during this time are rare and to see a very small Company of men indeed even more rare.
