Sir Matthew Hale (1609-1676), an English Lord Chief Justice is regarded as one of the greatest legal authorities from the 17th century. The were the first effort to provide a history of English Criminal Law and Madness, before examining more important crimes. He defined the differences between medical and legal insanity. He argued that only total insanity could excuse an offender from legal responsibility. This important principal is still utilized in criminal law today.
