Description:

Authentic 1701 English legal document between Mary Nash, and John Hart, for sale of a parcel of land in County Kent, England. Measures 25" X 17” and written on fine period vellum. Dated 5 Dec, 1701. Signed by Mary Nash, by her "marke” and witnessed on the back by many signatures including Roger Golding, “Churchguard.” Reads, in part: “This indenture made in…the Reign of our Sovereign Lord, William the Third, by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith, Anno 1701. Between Mary Nash daughter and heir of Samuel Nash late of Borden in the County of Kent, Yeoman deceased…and John Hart of Charing in the said County….said Mary Nash…has granted a bargain…for and in consideration of the full four and twenty pounds of lawful money of England to her in hand, paid by said John Hart…for part of land commonly known by the name of Staples.” County Kent is Southeast of London, in the Canterbury region of England. "Staple" is a village and civil parish in East Kent. Indentures during the reign of King William and Queen Anne are scarce, especially ones retaining the wax seals and all signatures. What makes this particular indenture important as well, is that beginning in 1701 Shilling Sixpence Tax Revenue Stamps were used and this has two beautiful embossed examples! The text is nice and dark without any significant fading and all very readable. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
