(0 Bids)Alexander Taylor Goodwin (August 9, 1837 July 3, 1899) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. In 1863, he was appointed as a clerk in the New York Adjutant General's office; and soon after commissioned as adjutant of the 45th Regiment of the National Guard. He was Recorder of the City of Utica from 1864 to 1868. He was a member of the New York State Senate (19th D.) in 1878 and 1879. He was Mayor of Utica from 1890 to 1892; and a presidential elector in 1892, voting for Grover Cleveland and Adlai E. Stevenson. ARTIST: Melvin Brown Ray (b. 1853, d. 1938), son of Chester and Mary B. (Brown) Ray, studied painting at the Academy of Design and at Cooper Institute, New York City. He also studied with private teachers. Later he taught at Utica Sketch Club, of which he was president for a number of years. He was a member of Central New York Society of Artists, Syracuse. He specialized in portraits but also painted landscapes. He exhibited locally and at more distant places like Ryder's in Cleveland OH and the Tate Gallery in London, England. He specialized in portraits of prominent lawyers, judges, businessmen, NY State Assemblymen (including his father) and US Congressmen. He even painted President Martin Van Buren. - Condition: Very Good Condition with no in painting. It has a repair on the bottom (see pics) There is some craquelure.
