The letter penned by a U.S. Military Soldier named Steve. He talks about being in Belgium now after being in Germany hearing the "crunch" of shell fire and not being able to sleep. He also talks about atrocities that SS German soldiers carried out on our men, two officers and a Red Cross worker ("You wouldn't believe humans capable of such barbarisim"). He also speaks about a soldier who was behind enemy lines and mentions mine fields. The Malmedy massacre was a war crime committed by members of Kampfgruppe Peiper, a German Waffen-SS unit led by Joachim Peiper, at Baugnez crossroads near Malmedy, Belgium, on December 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. Eighty-four American prisoners of war were massacred by their German captors.
