The poster depicts Liberty dressed in a flag and holding a gold shield, with a kneeling Boy Scout handing her a sword inscribed, "Be prepared. Born in Montabaur, Germany, Joseph Christian Leyendecker became a noted American illustrator and graphic designer who, between 1896 and 1950, painted more than four-hundred magazine covers, most of them of an idealized America, including 321 for the Saturday Evening Post. He particularly hit his stride in the 1930s. One of the most successful commercial illustrators of his time, he is best known for his advertisements for the "Arrow Collar Man" that laid the foundation for selling lifestyle with product. To obtain necessary funds for World War I, the United States Treasury resorted to borrowing through a series of bond issues. The first four issues were known as liberty loans; the fifth and last was called the victory loan. The third liberty loan was issued 5 April 1918.
