World War I began as a conflict between the Allies (France, the United Kingdom, and Russia) and the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sophie ignited the war in 1914. Italy joined the Allies in 1915, followed by the United States in 1917. A ceasefire was declared at 11 AM on 11 November 1918. The poster was a major tool for broad dissemination of information during the war. Countries on both sides of the conflict distributed posters widely to garner support, urge action, and boost morale. Many of the war savings stamps posters were issued by the United States Food Administration. The Committee on Public Information, Division of Pictorial Publicity, was established in New York City in April 1917 with Charles Dana Gibson as director, and discontinued in December 1918. Its function was to utilize the artists of the country in the war effort, especially in the drawing of posters. Horace Devitt Welsh, a Pennsylvania artist, was known for his illustrations, figure, genre paintings, and etchings. The war savings stamp (WSS) was a patriotic program used by the United States Treasury to help fund participation in World War I and World War II, and was principally aimed at school-age children. Savings stamps were available in ten cent and twenty-five cent versions, and provided interest. In some cases collections of stamps could be redeemed for war bonds.
