On November 2, 1855, Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner delivered a powerful and influential anti-slavery address titled The Slave Oligarchy and its Usurpations at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The Core Ultimatum: Delivered to a packed audience, Sumner famously called on the American electorate to make a definitive choice, asking, "Are you for Freedom, or are you for Slavery? ... Above all other questions, whether national or local, it now lifts itself, directly into the path of every voter, and calls for a plain and honest reply." Sumner fiercely attacked what abolitionists called the "Slave Oligarchy" or "Slave Power"the disproportionate political control held by Southern slaveholders in the federal government. He argued that this minority was actively eroding democratic institutions and attempting to spread slavery into newly organizing western territories. The speech was heavily distributed across the North by anti-slavery printers like Buell & Blanchard. It served as a critical organizing tool for the newly formed Republican Party, which sought to unite various political factions under a single, non-extension-of-slavery banner ahead of the pivotal 1856 presidential election.
