Description:

Graphite conte pencil / crayon drawings on cream wove paper, dated March and April, 1966. Unsigned. These drawings are rich images captured by Masood on the streets of New York City. Masood Ali Wilbert Warren was a African-American Muslim convert painter and sculptor known primarily for his portrait busts of famous figures and everyday images. He filled sketch books with drawings and watercolors of his observations of people, both during his military service and during his travels in the subways and buses of New York. He attended the Art Students League in New York in the 1930s, participated in the WPA, and earned a BA from New York University in 1939, and an MA from Temple University, Philadelphia in 1961. Warren exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, and the National Arts Club; much of his work is now in the Richard Allen Museum in Philadelphia. Other works by Mr. Warren, depicting military personnel and people at work - the policeman, the laborer, the soldier, the man and woman on the street - can be seen at various sites online, particularly those from recent auction records.
