Description:

Inuit artist Ikayukta Tunnillie (Ikajukta/Ekayutaq/Ikadukta) began to explore printmaking when it was introduced to the Inuit of Cape Dorset in the 1950's; she was one of the earliest artists to contribute works to the annual print collections. Between 1971 and 1980, she produced 30 prints that were featured in print catalogues. Tunnillie participated in several group exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States. In 1981, the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver held a retrospective of her work titled "Ikayukta Retrospect: Stone cuts, Lithographs and Drawings from 1972 to 1980." Tunnillie's drawings and engravings are included in the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the National Gallery of Canada, and many other well-known institutions. Also known as 'Kinngait' in Inuktitut, this ancient artistic community is a main stop for arctic cruise ships. Inhabited by native peoples for three thousand years, Cape Dorset is situated on Dorset Island, adjacent to Foxe Peninsula at the southwestern tip of Baffin Island.
