Signed lower right. Frank Hutchens was an American Impressionist painter known for his gentle landscapes and portraits. Indeed, one reviewer in the New York Times called him "an ingratiating interpreter of gentle scenes" (Feb. 8, 1920). One of four children in Canandaigua, NY family, Frank Townsend Hutchens was born in 1869 and attended Canandaigua Academy, where he studied drawing under Lucy B. Stowe, a local artist and instructor there at the time. By age 17 Hutchens was displaying his watercolors and crayon portraits in the windows of local bookstores along with those of his contemporaries the Crandall Brothers. He bas permanent collections in museums throughout the United States and Europe.
