This letter was written by Frazier Rosenkranz on February 9th, 1862, while he was stationed at Camp Butterfield, VA. He was with Company K in the 44th NY also known as Ellsworth Avengers. Colonel Ellsworth was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln and was one of the first casualties of the Civil War. He was shot and killed by a Confederate supporter while he removed a Confederate flag flying over a building in Washington, DC. Ellsworth became a symbol for the Union forces and the 44th NY Vol. rallied to the call. A distinguished Regiment which saw action in nearly every battle during the war, including Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, and Cold Harbor. The letter includes the original cover and a transcript is also included. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
