Description:

A 3” X 4.5” leather bound Bible containing 979 pages. Published in 1850 in New York by the American Bible Society. Fully wrapped in leather with a leather strap and loop. Page edges are gold gilt, as well as “Bible” on spine. Sepia Ink dedications and writing on back pages include family names of Walter Rugh, A.L. Mehrten and M.G. Mehrten. The 112th NY Infantry was organized at Jamestown, NY in Chautauqua County. The Regiment mustered in for three years of service on September 11th, 1862 under the command of Colonel Jeremiah C. Drake. The Regiment saw action at the battle of Cold Harbor, Bombardment of Fort Sumter, Cape Fear, Richmond, Petersburg, and the battle of Chaffins Farm, VA where Ebenezer Skellie was later to receive the MEDAL OF HONOR for his actions there. The unit mustered out in June of 1865, at Raleigh, NC. Included is a handwritten note dated 1983 by Mary R. Elies, who was the great granddaughter of Charles Gorman, and states that this Bible was carried by him during the Civil War

  • Condition: All pages appear to be present though some are coming loose from the spine. The leather covers as well as the strap show wear. There is some very old tape along the creases, otherwise very readable and stable example of a field carried personal artifact of a Union soldier
