  • Provenance: Harlan Page Buckland was born in Ithaca, New York, on Sept., 27, 1843, the son of Stephen and Evaline Buckland. He removed to Troy in 1872 and established a studio at 1 Franklin Square. His later studio locations in Troy were the Hall Building and the Keenan building. In 1896 he opened a studio in Albany but returned the next year to teach crayon painting at The Emma Willard School. During his later years his studio was located in his home on Hudson Avenue in Green Island. He married Emma Weeks in Green Island on June 13, 1888. Harlan died at his home on January 29, 1919. He is interred in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY. Buckland taught at the Emma Willard School of Art from 1896 to 1907. He then taught for a few years at the Troy School of Arts and Crafts at 405 Broadway. He specialized in moody, Impressionist works in crayon and pastel and was best known for his portraits. Historian, Rutherford Hayner, stated that he used a ”whimsical brush” stroke. His "boy in the moon" paintings exemplify Hayner's statement.

  • Exhibited: He primarily exhibited locally; these included an 1904 exhibition held at the Rensselaer Inn, his works included a landscape and “Lady With the Chrysanthemums.” His work is not frequently encountered
