BERNARD GERSTNER is a painter from Rochester, New York and he is noted for crisp color and design in his work. He is a painter, teacher and demonstrator. His subject matter surrounds him on beautiful Cape Ann though his subjects are not confined to this area. His painting trips and workshops have his work extolling the beauty of all New England as well as New York state. Gerstner holds memberships to Rockport Art Association, Boston Watercolor Society, Academic Artists, North Shore Arts Association, Rochester Art Club, International Marine Painters Association and New England Watercolor Society. Recent awards include the Gold Medal at North Shore, and the Eleanor M. Callow Award at Rockport. He got the nick name paints while in the Navy serving in World War II. He signed up for the Navy at age of seventeen and was deployed at the eighteen. His dad was a veteran himself and recommended that he enlist in the Navy rather than be drafted. Bernard was stationed on the legendary aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Hornet. He was so involved in his work that he slept in the ships paint shop. Bernie spent two years on the Hornet until the war ended. While serving on the Hornet Bernard had a wide array of duties; he painted the whites on the planes including the propeller and numbers. He was also in charge of painting the scoreboard on the main deck of the carrier. Bernard had to get up on a ladder every day and add Japanese flags for every enemy shot down. By the end of his tour he had stenciled 668 flags on the scoreboard. This scoreboard still hangs on the Hornet today. He also painted pictures of his fellow shipmens girlfriends as gifts. Bernard started to craft his gift as an artist while serving on the Hornet. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
