Lot 108

Up for your consideration is this standard issue C. 1860's Civil War Shell Jacket used by Cavalry Regiments. The dark blue wool body is trimmed in yellow down the front, along the back sides, the hem, a single chevron on the cuffs, and along the collar. The polished cotton liner remains fully intact and has a single left breast pocket. The sleeves are fully lined as well, and the right sleeve lining is marked "Moody, Vol. N.Y." while faded is still clearly visible. Attributed to Charles Moody of the 8th N.Y. Volunteers, Cavalry. The 8th was a very distinguished Regiment, also known as the "Rochester Regiment". They were originally organized in Rochester, NY on Nov 14th, 1861, and served until June 27th, 1865. They lost a total of 324 men during their service with action seen at dozens of battles, most notably at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. Charles Moody mustered in at the age of 18, was captured at the battle of Wilson's Raid, sent to Andersonville Prison, later paroled, and eventually mustered out of service in June of 1865. Condition: Missing 2 front breast general service eagle 14mm buttons, and missing one collar cavalry button. The yellow trim shows wear and some loss on the front and there is staining and soiling to the liner at the cuffs. There is some light pilling to the underarm area, and the collar eye-hook is missing. There is no moth damage noted, and no off odors either. The dark blue wool body is very sound as well as the polished lining intact too. Still retains the original pillows on the back. Overall a very strong example having seen a great deal of action, engagements and perhaps even prison service. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything. Please ask specific questions on details or condition prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS. We box and ship to keep costs low.
