It has the soldier's initials carved and there are notch marks which could represent number of battles and or kills (debated topic). Original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket made by The Springfield Armory circa 1861-1862, a total of over 265,000 units were produced in those years. Breech date is strongly stamped 1862as is the VP and eagle head marks. Weapon also retains the original two-leaf rear sight. Lock plate is nicely stamped with a spread winged eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD motif in front of the hammer and a strong, sharp 1862 date stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are good. Musket is complete and retains its original iron nose cap, iron nipple and bolster screw, barrel bands, sling swivels, and buttplate. The weapon has the original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with threads at opposite end that are good. It is a very attractive example of the standard Civil War infantry rifle -musket.
